Maidstone High Street

Designs for the east end of the High Street create an open area, Broadcloth Square, with
the Town Hall as its focus. The design is based on market trading in the early 1600’s when Maidstone rose to county town status as a wealthy cloth producer. The coloured stripes are the exact width and length as Kentish wool broadcloth, famed for their quality and colour, ‘dyed in the wool’ on the River Medway here.
